how to book
There are 2 ways to book for Planners' School 1:
- online
- by post / fax
The quickest and easiest way is to book online. Booking online allows you to pay online by credit card or to book and pay later. Credit cards accepted online are Visa and Mastercard only. (American Express is not accepted). A 4% surcharge will be added to all credit card payments.
To book online but pay later, follow the instructions on the 3rd page of the online booking form. You will be invoiced and payment is required by BACS or cheque by return.
Alternatively, download the booking form and post / fax back the booking form. To receive a hard copy, please email us at with your address.

If you have not already made study tour choice on the booking form, please email your choice to as soon as possible.
You will be given tickets for your Study Tour when you register at the School.
how to get there [Top]
Planning Summer School takes place at University of St Andrews on the North Haugh Campus.
The University has an excellent Travel Service which will be able to advise you on planning your journey. They can also book flights, trains and taxis. Pease call 01334 462345 and ask for Clair Waterhouse (opening hours 10:00-16:30 Monday to Friday) or email.
Alternatively, you may find the transportdirect.info site useful in helping to plan your journey.
The nearest airport is Edinburgh.
- Onward travel from Edinburgh Airport (by train):
- Catch the Airlink bus to Edinburgh City Centre (located at Stand 19 outside the terminal building). Buses leave approximately every 10 minutes and you will be dropped on Waverley Bridge which is located outside Edinburgh's main train station (Edinburgh Waverley). The fare is £3 single and £5 return and the journey time approximately 20 minutes. For more information on this service go to www.flybybus.com
When you arrive at Waverley train station you need to take the train to Leuchars which is 6 miles from St Andrews. The trains run every hour and the journey time is one hour. For those delegates coming to Summer School by train, there will be a coach at Leuchars railway station to take you to the University. Trains come in hourly from Edinburgh to Leuchars and a coach will be there to meet each train arriving during the afternoon, starting with the train arriving at Leuchars at 12:09 and the last one being met will be the one at 18:05. Look out for the Summer School coach signs when you arrive at the station.- For delegates arriving outside those hours, you can either take a taxi to St Andrews or the local bus. The 99 bus service runs approx every 15mins and the taxis cost approximately £10. If you are planning on taking a taxi, why not print off the luggage label and attach to your bags, so that you can easily identify other delegates and share taxis.
- Onward travel from Edinburgh Airport (by taxi):
- It is much cheaper to pre-book taxis. The University's Travel Service has reduced rates for airport taxis from Edinburgh to St Andrews. To book please call them on 01334 462345. Please mention that you are attending Planning Summer School and they will then try and co-ordinate other delegates to share taxis to reduce the number of cars on the road and costs to delegates. An idea of their rates are below:

The nearest station is Leuchars (6 miles) which is on the main line from London (King's Cross) - Edinburgh - Aberdeen. Train information can be found on www.nationalrail.co.uk/planmyjourney or call the University Travel Service on 01334 462345.
From Leuchars, the University can be reached by taxi or bus. The 99 bus service runs approx every 15mins.

If you are using SatNav, the postcode for New Hall accommodation is KY16 9XW.There is free parking opposite New Hall accommodation blocks.
- From the South - From south, cross Forth Road Bridge and proceed north along M90 to junction 2A. Follow the A92 until just before Cupar, then join the A91 to St Andrews. Alternatively, take M90 to junction 8, then A91 to St Andrews.
- From the South-West - From south-west, either go east along M8 to Forth Road Bridge and then by route (a), or by Kincardine Bridge and A977 towards Kinross, joining M90 at junction 6 and exiting at junction 8, then by A91 to St Andrews.
- From the North-West - leave Perth on M90 then by A913 to Cupar and St Andrews.
- From the North - From the North via Dundee, cross Tay Road Bridge on A92 and after 1 mile via A919 to Leuchars and A91 to St Andrews.
- You can print off directions from your home by using MapQuest.
registration [Top]
All Schools take place at the University of St Andrews.
Registration for the Planners'School 1 takes place at the University on Tuesday 2 Septemberin the foyer of the Physics Building (see campus map) from 12:00-19:00. Any delegates arriving later in the evening, can register for the School the following morning.

accommodation [Top]
The accommodation is at New Hall on the North Haugh campus (see campus map). You can collect your keys from the Reception from 2pm until 10.00pm. If you are arriving after that time, please let us know so that we can alert the Night Porter who will be able to let you into the building.
The rooms are Scottish Tourist Board 3 star standard. All have a double bed, en-suite shower, toilet and wash-hand basin. All the bedrooms are serviced daily and provided with towels and complimentary toiletries. Each has a television and tea and coffee making facilities. All the bedrooms have a telephone, permitting calls at no charge throughout the University network and outside calls using a pre-payment card, which can be purchased in the residence. The bedroom telephones also directly receive incoming calls and their numbers are displayed on the telephones. There are bedrooms designed for wheelchair users, each with a single bed.
All meals are also in New Hall and there is a bar to relax in during the evenings.
emails/internet [Top]
There is a computer suite in the foyer of the Physics foyer, where delegates can get access to the internet and emails. You will need to buy a password from the School Office (£2) and this will give you unlimited access throughout your stay at the School. If you are bringing your own laptop, you can also buy a password which will allow wireless access in the Physics foyer and plug in access in the New Hall bedrooms (but you must be sure to bring the correct connection cables with you).
city centre [Top]
St Andrews town centre is about ¾ mile away from the North Haugh campus (approx 15 minutes walk). It is a very walkable town with its origins dating from the sixth century and it is still has a mediaeval street plan. It has a population of just 14,000 and there are restaurants and bars down enticing wynds (narrow lanes or passage ways) and interesting and independent shops.
The university has been a large part of the town for nearly 600 years.
St Andrews is of course very famous for its golf courses. Golf was first played there around 1400 and there are now five links courses. The campus is within walking distance of the most famous of them all; The Old Course and the Royal & Ancient Clubhouse. This is just in front of the West Sands, a 2 mile sandy beach which is famous for the opening scenes of the film 'Chariots of Fire'.
